Madison County inmate dies from suspected fentanyl overdose

Madison County Sheriff's detectives are investigating after an inmate died from a suspected overdose in his cell early Wednesday morning.

Detention officers found Tevin Jerome Bennett, 33, unresponsive around 4:30 a.m. while delivering breakfast to inmates. Bennett was in jail without bond on a charge of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance.

Detectives say they found what tested positive for fentanyl underneath Bennett's clothing. He had no visible injuries or signs of trauma.

The investigation is ongoing to determine where the drugs came from and authorities say arrests are expected to be made.

The sheriff's office says the jail has multiple protocols in place to prevent drugs from entering the facility, including scanners and digitizing mail. The facility also has treatment procedures for inmates who suffer from substance abuse issues.

鈥淥ur Detention Officers work hard every day to maintain the safety and security of the jail," said Sheriff Kevin Turner. "Trying to keep illegal substances out of the facility is part of that work. We will continue to investigate how these drugs got into the facility and will prosecute anyone involved to the full extent of the law.鈥
