Stay safe in heat: Tips from Huntsville parents and HEMSI

  • Updated

Don Webster from HEMSI advises limiting outdoor time to 30-45 minutes with breaks, staying hydrated, and wearing light clothing.

Parents at Mark Russell Park in Huntsville are taking precautions to protect their children from the heat.

As temperatures soar, it's crucial to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. Don Webster from HEMSI emphasized the importance of staying hydrated and wearing light, breathable clothing during outdoor activities.

Webster said, "The bottom line to it is if they see that somebody is starting to have some signs and symptoms to these heat-related emergencies, they need to take action pretty quick, get them out of the environment, get them in an area where there is a lot of air moving around, remove some of their clothing, loosen it up where they can get some air."

He recommended limiting outdoor activities to 30 to 45 minutes, followed by a 10 to 15-minute break in a cool place. This is particularly important for young children and older adults, who are more susceptible to heat-related emergencies.

Parents at Mark Russell Park in Huntsville are taking extra precautions with their children. They focus on keeping their kids hydrated, well-fed, and spending time in the shade.

"We try to pick a shaded playground, first of all. This playground is really great with all the shade. I like to check the temperature of the slide before they go down and just keep them hydrated with some salty snacks," said one parent.

Webster also advised checking the temperature of playground equipment before use and recommended letting outdoor hoses run for 30 to 45 seconds to ensure the water is cool before use. He warned temperatures from hoses and playground equipment can reach levels that could burn.
