Officials with Huntsville City Schools said Wednesday that a student was taken into custody after a firearm was found inside a vehicle on campus.
Officials said that after following a tip, school administrators worked with law enforcement to search a student's vehicle. During the search they say a firearm was found inside the vehicle. The student was then taken into custody by law enforcement and removed from campus.
David Coker, Grissom High School principal, said that there was no disruption to the school day and that the situation was handled in accordance with safety protocols. Coker says the student will face serious disciplinary consequences and will not be returning to Grissom High School.
Coker had this to say in a statement released on Wednesday: "This incident is a strong reminder of the importance of our 'see something, say something' approach. We are grateful to those who reported concerns, allowing us to act promptly and maintain a safe environment for our students and staff. We encourage everyone to continue reporting any concerns to a teacher, administrator, or through the Anonymous Alerts system.
"The safety of our school community remains our top priority, and we will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to ensure a secure learning environment.
"As a precaution, we'll have additional security on campus for the remainder of the week. Thank you for your continued support."
